The film follows the Gunslinger&#8217;s struggle to prevent\u00a0the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together.<\/p>\n<div id=\"twenty20-2\" class=\"twenty20\" style=\"width: 100% !important; clear: both;\"><div class=\"twentytwenty-container twenty20-2 \"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_DB0010_Plate_v1.1132.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Before image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_DB0010_Comp_v1.1132.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"After image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of MPC\u2019s tasks was to bring to life the\u00a0bat-like Crimson Creatures and create \u2018The Thinny\u2019, the ethereal barrier between the human world and a hellish dimension. Both elements were critical to a story point involving the story\u2019s protagonists Jake Chambers and the Gunslinger,\u00a0 so teams worked on these two effects in parallel to ensure they would tie together on screen.\u00a0 The modelling team sculpted the 10-foot bat-like creature based on art department concepts, paying particular attention to facial details, such as wrinkling, to help bring realism. The additional challenge was to ensure that the creature could interact with the ethereal membrane while balancing the complex aesthetic that the director envisaged.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"twenty20-3\" class=\"twenty20\" style=\"width: 100% !important; clear: both;\"><div class=\"twentytwenty-container twenty20-3 \"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_WV0020_Plate_v1.1185.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Before image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_WV0020_Comp_v1.1185.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"After image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The next challenge involved the House Demon and portal within the Dutch Hill sequence. MPC began by working from the plate material, shot on an interior set with four green-suited stunt performers acting as the demon, a serpent-like creature.\u00a0 As work progressed, it became clear that the House Demon would have a big impact on the structure of the house, destroying large sections of the building. MPC built a digital replica that could be destroyed in a more flexible manner. Using Kali, MPC\u2019s in-house destruction tool, FX artists were able to create the photo-real destruction of the building. The portal was envisaged to cycle through different stages, from appearing as a dangerous tunnel of energy connecting the two dimensions, to a more sedate membrane that allows the characters to pass between dimensions freely.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"twenty20-4\" class=\"twenty20\" style=\"width: 100% !important; clear: both;\"><div class=\"twentytwenty-container twenty20-4 \"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_FF0210_Plate_v1.1001.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Before image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_FF0210_Comp_v1.1001.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"After image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">MPC was also responsible for visual effects sequences at the film\u2019s climax. These sequences required creating detailed digital doubles for a fight between Sayre (one of the evil Man in Black\u2019s henchmen) and Roland Deschain, including both characters crashing through a window, fighting in mid-air, falling into a speeding bus, and ending up in the streets of New York. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"twenty20-5\" class=\"twenty20\" style=\"width: 100% !important; clear: both;\"><div class=\"twentytwenty-container twenty20-5 \"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_SC0190_Plate_v1.1016.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Before image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ASC_SC0190_Comp_v1.1016.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"After image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to creating the character doubles, the sequence involved numerous set extensions and breaking CG glass and debris created through extensive cloth simulations and lighting work. Later in the sequence, Roland and the Man in Black face off,\u00a0 with CG projectiles including glass, concrete and metal.
