To make it feel different to the dragons familiar from other popular fantasy series and films, the team designed and modelled the character&nbsp;from the ground up, including&nbsp;scales \u2013 even though these wouldn\u2019t be seen by the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"631\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/2021\/03\/Noble-Dragon-Low-angle.jpg?resize=1200%2C631&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14941 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Noble-Dragon-Low-angle.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Noble-Dragon-Low-angle.jpg?resize=520%2C273&amp;ssl=1 520w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Noble-Dragon-Low-angle.jpg?resize=647%2C340&amp;ssl=1 647w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1200\/631;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was really rewarding to work on the incredible dragons for&nbsp;The Watch, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1099599\/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1,\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Rawlinson <\/a>executive producer for Realtime. \u201cThe whole team really enjoyed being able to flex our 3D character design and building skills, and we&#8217;ve loved working with the fantastic team on the series.&#8221;<br \/>Principle photography took place in South Africa, creating the live action plates Realtime needed to incorporate the dragons. \u201cThe art department created a full-size replica of Goodboy for actress Lara Rossi (Lady Sybil) to hold in shot,\u201d says Rawlinson. \u201cHe was then replaced in post-production by the CG Goodboy. This was partially to help with her performance, but we also hoped that in wide shots we could use that rather than the CGI model, to reduce costs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"772\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/2021\/03\/TW1_thy042_0050_v037.1053.jpg?resize=1200%2C772&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14939 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/TW1_thy042_0050_v037.1053.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/TW1_thy042_0050_v037.1053.jpg?resize=497%2C320&amp;ssl=1 497w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/TW1_thy042_0050_v037.1053.jpg?resize=528%2C340&amp;ssl=1 528w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1200\/772;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smoke and lightning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-vis was carried out for all the key CG sequences using a mixture of filmed plates and full CG environments. \u201cThis allowed for a continuing creative dialogue with the showrunner, director, and producer, as well as Lola VFX who were in charge of creating the cityscapes,\u201d explained Rawlinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time look dev on the Noble Dragon was started. \u201cThere were a number of issues with a huge creature who is made of smoke, fire, and lightning that had to be solved. Legibility being the most important,\u201d Rawlinson revealed. \u201cAs she had to work in both day- and night-time situations, a flexible tool set of passes was created to suit all conditions. It allowed for independent control over her eyes, smoky body, internal lightning, fiery throat and belly, as well as a skeletal pass to add definition to her skull and chest for the closer shots.\u201cBy doing this, we accomplished what we needed to; we made this dragon distinctly different from anything that\u2019s come before. It takes what people think when they hear the word dragon and turns it on its head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"631\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/2021\/03\/Noble-dragon-CU.jpg?resize=1200%2C631&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14947 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Noble-dragon-CU.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Noble-dragon-CU.jpg?resize=520%2C273&amp;ssl=1 520w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Noble-dragon-CU.jpg?resize=647%2C340&amp;ssl=1 647w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1200\/631;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The same can be said for Goodboy, who presented his own, if somewhat smaller, challenges, according to Rawlinson. \u201cWhile the Noble dragon was all about the big picture, Goodboy is all about detail,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the scarring on his face to the texture of his wings, fine, nuanced animation allowed this character to transition from cute to deadly, beginner to proficient flyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the end, both dragons came away looking different to anything we\u2019ve seen before. And we think both dragons are a great addition to the series.
