Directors dom&nic have directed Kerry Low Low\u2019s latest commercial Mouse<\/em>, with a MPC team creating a fully CG rodent and 50,000 traps<\/p>\n

The spot illustrates just how far a mouse will go for a nibble of cheese on toast, featuring an acrobatic super stunt rodent defying thousands of mouse traps.\u00a0 The spot was produced by Jo Charlesworth at Fallon and John Madsen at Outsider.<\/p>\n

\"kerry_stills.0001\" According to dom&nic, Mouse <\/em>posed an ‘ultimate test’ of 3D CGI and of MPC to create a convincing photorealistic mouse in a story of two parts: \u201cIn the first part the mouse had to feel very naturalistic, instinctive and cautious as it attempted to pass through the thousands of traps, while in the second part the mouse had to become an acrobatic super stunt-mouse, jumping spinning and avoiding death by the closest margin. We gave the 3D team a couple of wooden traps and a real mouse as a pet to get them inspired, and after 3 months of hard work and creative collaboration they gave us screen magic! Throughout the project the team at MPC did such great work it is hard to tell what’s in camera and what is 3D.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pet mouse donated by dom&nic helped the MPC artists develop the look of Kerry LowLow\u2019s CG hero and to familiarise them with rodent movements and facial expressions.\u00a0 Reference pictures were taken during the shoot and used as the basis of the perilous stunt.\u00a0 MPC VFX Supervisor Jake Mengers<\/a>, who has been responsible for other CG creatures in the past, led the team that animated the hero character. The mouse retained a realistic look for the first part of the commercial before his transformation to stunt mouse for the second half.\u00a0 Maya was used for animation, with in-house tool \u2018Furtility\u2019 grooming the fur and Renderman and Tickle used for the rendering.

One of the main technical challenges was animating the many thousands of CG mouse traps seen snapping and colliding with each other in each shot. \u00a0To achieve this physics-based \u2018domino effect,\u2019 Ashley Bernes wrote a series of event based simulation scripts to automate the traps snapping behaviour based on incoming collisions. \u00a0This worked together with another of MPC\u2019s in-house tools, PAPI to create the action shot.<\/p>\n

With the directors wanting control over all camera moves in post, the compositing process was equally intense. Led by VFX Supervisor Stephen Newbold, the 2D team used Nuke to composite the 3D heavy shots \u2013 Mouse<\/em> was the first MPC project to be done exclusively in the Foundry\u2019s software.\u00a0Nuke\u2019s ability to work with huge resolutions was well used, as some shots in this job are over 8k, and it enabled the virtual 2D camera moves which zoom right into the mouse.\u00a0 The CG mouse and traps were all composited and graded in a linear workspace using multiple passes.\u00a0 Extensive clean-up and floor replacements were also carried out and Jean Clement Soret added the master grade.
