How can you be more creative? Inspiration is often fleeting and especially fragile when faced with outside pressures like cashflow or supporting a family. The creative block is an all too familiar visitor to many designers. However creative people are also expert at coming up with solutions to problems and this one is no different.<\/h3>\n

These can involve grandiose schemes for putting yourself in the mood for inspiration or just taking a shortcut and typing words into Google. There are also tools such as mindmapping software or Brian Eno\u2019s \u2018Oblique Strategies\u2019. According to user Damien Smith of ISO<\/a>, this set of playing cards – blank on one side and with a simple abstract direction on the reverse – can be used to trigger unexpected thinking and to see creative problems afresh.<\/p>\n

In this feature I\u2019ve explored a few of methods that creative professionals have built up for dealing with a blank page. It doesn\u2019t matter if that page is paper, html, video monitor or a blank canvas in Photoshop, all these helper processes are easily transferable to any discipline. So if you find yourself in the doldrums, try some or just one of them and you\u2019ll soon find your mind is soaring again.<\/p>\n

External influences<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a wealth of aids to being more creative to be found on the Internet and in magazines like Digital Arts. Twitter can be a source of inspiration. Dino Burbidge, creative director at Digital Outlook<\/a>, for example always has the TwitBin<\/a> Firefox plugin visible in his browser to graze interesting tweets, and also recommends the TED Talks<\/a> \u2018for a quick, mind-realigning hit\u2019. Jan Ligaard of Icon 22 suggests following design tutorials by the creative pros, which not only enhance your skills, but may also lend a different view to how you approach a creative project<\/p>\n

Ideal idling<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lot of designers begin the day with a spot of mindless activity. Not violence, but scribbling. It\u2019s a technique sometimes known as \u2018morning pages\u2019. Basically as soon as you wake up spend some time filling three pages of paper with your thoughts, in a stream of consciousness fashion. It\u2019s been known to clear the mind and spark inspiration. Illustrator Andy Potts<\/a> meanwhile follows an alternative morning routine of aimless doodling. \u201cI find that these doodles or marks I make without thinking usually end up in my finished pieces or spark a creative direction I hadn\u2019t considered until then,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Take a step sideways<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Andy Williams, Senior Digital Strategist at Resn<\/a>, thinking too much can harm your creativity. \u201cDo something that you would not normally do because it does not make sense,\u201d he says actively encouraging doing something stupid so that mistakes occur. \u201cMistakes allow events to happen outside of the restrictions imposed by our circumscribed logic,\u201d he adds \u201cIt may be a little scary but it only takes one small step in the right direction to find stupidity and augment ones creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a view shared by Chris Berridge, creative director of Block Interactive<\/a>, who feels that only when you look at things from the outside, from a perspective set apart from existing perceptions, will you be truly creative.<\/p>\n

Identify your endpoint<\/h4>\n

Having a clear objective in mind is essential for stimulating creative design. Identify your audience and objectives, isolate the message and think how to best communicate it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccurately defining your design \u2018problem\u2019 leads to the most creative and innovative results,\u201d says Jim Rawson of Digital Design<\/a>. \u201cIt focuses the brain on problem-solving, something which human beings are incredibly good at.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rawson suggests you ask who is the design for and how you want people to react. \u201cWhen you have the answers to the questions, write them.\u00a0 Inevitably it won\u2019t be long before your mind starts to \u2018join up the dots\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t sweat it, ignore it<\/h4>\n

If a piece of work isn\u2019t going well, and the deadline isn\u2019t too pressing, then walk away from it before terminal frustration sets in. Take a break, shut out the world for a bit.<\/p>\n

Faced with the prospect of \u2018flogging a dead horse of an idea\u2019, illustrator Andy Potts will often try to empty his head of thoughts with such potentially uninspiring activities as riding a bike, watching mindless daytime TV or reading a book unrelated to the creative problem. \u201cInspiration can pop into your head when you least expect it and particularly when you\u2019re not trying to force it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Inspiring elements<\/h4>\n

Assemble a store of creative\/fun\/inspiring objects and artwork\/clippings. Jeremy Jones, creative director of Digital Marmalade,<\/a> touts Flickr as a great place to keep your digital inspiration, while Delete<\/a> has a dedicated online archive – or just use a physical scrapbook. When the creative block hits, retrieve random items from this collection or pull random words from dictionaries. Then force yourself to make something containing the element or thoughts inspired by the words. You might not create something useful in the first round, but Jan Ligaard of ICON22 <\/a>says, his team often finds the final signed off deliverables will contain some elements from the results of this forced creativity session.<\/p>\n

Timing is everything<\/h4>\n

Several designers including Jeremy Jones of Digital Marmalade, and Marc Diamond<\/a> suggest that setting your own deadlines, even when they are artificial, can aid creative focus. Jones says that a bit of pressure can work wonders in forcing you to come up with ideas, while Diamond says that if there\u2019s no urgency, creative juices aren\u2019t likely to start bubbling. True inspiration often needs a nudge.<\/p>\n

Or, do as Emlyn Firth, Senior Designer at ISO<\/a> suggests, and leave it to the last minute, drink shed loads of coffee and let the adrenaline kick your ass on the all-nighter.<\/p>\n

Creatures of habit<\/h4>\n

Jonathan Himoff, CEO of Rezzable<\/a>, feels the biggest danger to creativity is behavioural routines and has found that encouraging staff to work from a completely different space, even if it is just a park or a coffee shop, can often aid the thought process. Designer Kurt Smith<\/a> feels that by daily changing one little aspect of your routine, no matter how mundane, can help to challenge yourself without ever knowing it. On the other hand filmmaker\/artist Colin Kennedy finds that a morning routine, like running a bath and flitting through the challenges in the coming day in his mind, will help inspire him and shield him from creative troughs.<\/p>\n

Get sociable<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not many designers would need an excuse to kick back with a few drinks in a social setting, but try doing this with the express purpose of creating ideas. Establish such events as \u2018creative beers\u2019 to help stop the discussion wandering into general chat about football, house prices and iPhones.<\/p>\n

Bring in people outside your immediate creative circle like planners or client\u2019s friends to give a different view. Seek opinions \u2013 getting as many people as possible to critique your work and ideas is always a good step. However always take a positive attitude and keep the discussion moving.<\/p>\n

Use tools<\/h4>\n

Make sure you have drawing and writing materials scattered around your house and take them with you wherever you go- you never know when inspiration will hit. You can also make use of digital tools, like digital artist and Gridiron<\/a> creative director Angie Taylor. \u201cI\u2019m addicted to Autodesk SketchbookX on my iPhone which lets me draw with my finger when I\u2019m on a train or bus,\u201d she says \u201cI love the fact it\u2019s hard to control as it creates a sense of carelessness that\u2019s quite refreshing. I can\u2019t be anal, it forces me to let go and become more creative as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n
