The studio was tasked with creating the entire environment surrounding the massively destructive attack on the enormous fleet of ships within a very truncated eight-week production schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The most expensive Chinese-language picture ever made, \u2018Red Cliff\u2019 is a co-production of China Film Group, South Korea\u2019s Showbox Entertainment, Taiwan\u2019s CMC Entertainment group and Japan\u2019s Avex Entertainment. Based on the historic Battle of Red Cliffs and other events during the end of the Han Dynasty and immediately prior to the period of the Three Kingdoms in ancient China, the film stars such Asian heavyweight talents as Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi and many others.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-845 lazyload\" title=\"RedCliffBattle5\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/HLIC\/6edd0709ec17493c15cc34bb3ca5d338.jpg?resize=500%2C369&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"RedCliffBattle5\" width=\"500\" height=\"369\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/369;\" \/> \u201cWith shots that called for a fleet of 2,500 of the same 26-metre boats, giving each of the boats a unique \u2018hand-crafted\u2019 feel was both a creative and technical challenge,\u201d explained Jason Crosby, VFX Supervisor, Frantic Films VFX. \u201cWe really wanted to avoid the repetitive look that comes from using the same CG model. To do this, we broke the boats down into components that were randomly assembled using a rule-based particle system called Thinking Particles, which also propagated and animated the fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the entire CG sequence of 2,500 boats was populated with soldiers &#8211; roughly 70,000 in all &#8211; who needed to be seen performing on the ship. The scene also featured fire and smoke elements, CG explosions and boat damage from impact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/?page_id=831\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Read more out the visual effects on Red Cliff in the Revelation section of Fired By Design<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Frantic team was led by Crosby and VFX Producer Bridgitte Krupke and comprised 15 3D artists and 11 compositors. While most work was handled out of Frantic\u2019s LA office, the company\u2019s Winnipeg studio was responsible for all the water simulation work.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-847 lazyload\" title=\"RedCliffBattle4\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/HLIC\/54e74a3e9a771853d09201d42343cc20.jpg?resize=500%2C254&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"RedCliffBattle4\" width=\"500\" height=\"254\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 500\/254;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Frantic collaborated with The Orphanage in San Francisco, delivering shots for review and approval to Visual Effects Supervisor Craig Hayes. Both director John Woo and VFX Producer Jack Geist were in China during post-production, so Frantic had the additional challenge of managing the 15-hour time difference.
