{"id":9992,"date":"2016-02-25T22:01:19","date_gmt":"2016-02-25T22:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.firedbydesign.com\/?p=9992"},"modified":"2016-05-10T14:01:37","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T13:01:37","slug":"9992","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firedbydesign.com\/?p=9992","title":{"rendered":"MPC storms ahead on The Finest Hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"western\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9994 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/2016\/02\/the-finest-hours.jpg?resize=600%2C247&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"the-finest-hours\" width=\"600\" height=\"247\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/the-finest-hours.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/the-finest-hours.jpg?resize=520%2C214&amp;ssl=1 520w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/247;\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">MPC completed around 900 shots across 10 months of post-production for heroic action-thriller, <em>The Finest Hours.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Retelling t<\/span>he true story of the &#8216;greatest small boat rescue in US Coast Guard history&#8217; saw<span lang=\"en-US\"> VFX supervisor Seth Maury and producer Felix Crawshaw working closely with director Craig Gillespie and production VFX supervisor Kevin Hahn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">MPC\u2019s work primarily consisted of recreating an immersive nor\u2019easter storm including ocean swells, turbulent seas, blowing rain and snow, and a sequence where a 36 foot Coast Guard boat must cross a digital version of Chatham bar, with 30-50ft waves rolling, swelling and crashing around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Shooting began in the autumn of 2014 in a 120ft by 80ft and 12 ft deep water-tank built for the shoot at a warehouse in Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. The film-makers built a large gimbal set of the Coast Guard CG36500 rescue boat, a full-size mock-up of the Pendleton hull, and a replica of the Pendleton engine room that could be flooded with 6ft of water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">A number of scenes were also filmed at various locations in Cape Cod and four period rescue boats were restored for production. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The visual effects work started early on in production with the team creating some full CG shots in order to understand what would be required to create a storm of the magnitude required to tell the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">MPC\u2019s team completed around 300 large-scale water simulation shots, 300 weather and environment shots and 300 shots of the ocean behind actors shot on bluescreen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Digital doubles of the crew members, as well as digital versions of the Pendleton T2 tanker and CG36500 Coast Guard boat were also built by MPC\u2019s team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">MPC said the most challenging work involved a sequence where the CG36500 Coast Guard boat crosses the Chatham Bar in 30-50ft waves. The waves were in various state of swelling, crashing, dumping and spilling.\u00a0 MPC developed systems for creating each of these waves, and additional systems for adding layers of waves into the same scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9993 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/fbdimg\/2016\/02\/O_PB4090_marketing_final_v1.1425-2.jpg?resize=600%2C251&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"O_PB4090_marketing_final_v1.1425-2\" width=\"600\" height=\"251\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/O_PB4090_marketing_final_v1.1425-2.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firedbydesign.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/O_PB4090_marketing_final_v1.1425-2.jpg?resize=520%2C218&amp;ssl=1 520w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/251;\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Many shots in this sequence were crafted as single-solution waves, such as looking down the barrel of a crashing wave, or being pushed along and backwards by a wave that had already crashed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">For the large-scale full CG water simulation shots, MPC built a library of FX elements and CG renders that were needed to create the ocean, consisting of the base ocean, a foam pass, a mist pass, a fine spray pass, a bubble pass, a water texture pass and refraction and reflection passes for water surfaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">A constantly blowing CG mist pass that the filmmakers named<em> Speed Mist<\/em> was added to the real footage shot on location in Cape Cod and on set in Quincy to accentuate the stor<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">m. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-US\">For the shots that were panoramic enough to show interaction between the practical or CG boat and the water surface, there was also a suite of elements rendered to connect the boat and water, such as splashes, sprays, bow wakes, tail wakes, and engine wash of bubbles, turbulent water, foam and spray.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/moving-picture.com\/film\" target=\"_blank\">Visit MPC<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/firedbydesign.com\/9855\/mpc-adds-magic-to-into-the-woods\/\" target=\"_blank\">See more by MPC on Fired By Design<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MPC completed around 900 shots across 10 months of post-production for heroic action-thriller, The Finest Hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":129,"featured_media":10026,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[68],"tags":[272,2976,205,2977],"class_list":["post-9992","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-vfx-projects","tag-mpc","tag-the-finest-hours","tag-vfx","tag-water-simulation"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
